Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) Located at 59th and Ashland on Chicago’ South Side, a new two-story brick office building was provided to house the Illinois Department of Human Services’ community and office needs. Public spaces were enlivened with an angled glass wall, exposed columns and blue ceramic tile walls, all set within a simple masonry box. Due to security concerns, office windows were expressed as a vertical rhythm of openings, offset with the horizontal nature of the public spaces. Located in a blighted neighborhood, this IDHS building provides a fresh aesthetic to serve the needs of its population.
