Halsted Retail This is a concept design for a mixed-use commercial building at the corner of Halsted and Belmont in Chicago. The design envisions first floor retail with two levels of parking above and a health club on the top floor. The façade of the building is segregated by use, providing horizontal banding (metal panels and louvers) and graphic panels in front of the parking floors, vertically tying together the glass façades of the retail and health club floors. A base of stone provides a pedestrian scale and vertical brick elements reduce the horizontality of the façade. The design was intended as a prototype which could be applied to any of numerous corner sites in the city, drawing on strong urban design and a modern aesthetic.
