Design Studio As part of the renovation of the 225 West Hubbard loft, Design Studio needed to transform a cluttered and dark tangle of retail spaces into an open and light filled four-level showroom. Concerned about visibility into the store, the perimeter bays were lowered to sidewalk levels and openings were provided in the floor, requiring special approval to allow horizontal and vertical fire shutters, typically nor permitted in a timber loft. Floating stairs between the lower level, first and second floor spaces were provided and open showrooms featuring natural maple floors, moveable illuminated backdrops and steel cable railings tie the various levels together. Angled bay windows, projecting over the sidewalk, were provided on the second floor to allow visibility from both the sidewalk and passing elevated commuter trains. The resulting showroom allows easy visibility and accessibility between the levels and provides a modern, clean and light aesthetic which complements the modern furniture sold.
