Batavia Community Recreation Center
Chicago, Illinois

The Batavia Park District was looking to build a new Community Recreation Center (CRC) in the heart of historic Downtown Batavia. They entered into a Public/ private Partnership with Preferred Development to design and build the new 3-story center. The final design by Hirsch Associates developed the building into both public and private components, including community rooms, indoor swimming polls with lockers, a basketball courts with a mezzanine running track, a fitness center, yoga and dance rooms, a roof deck, offices and support spaces. Also included in the design was a 3-level public parking structure with first floor retail. The modern design included the use of traditional Batavia Limestone, prevalent throughout the town, brick and large expanses of glass and centered on a three-story high public atrium which served as both an organizing element for the CRC and as a connection between the downtown retail district and the riverside entertainment district. The design was submitted to the community for a vote by referendum, but narrowly lost due to the adverse economic conditions.
